Speaker Bio:
Dr. Rachel Dutton, PhD is a scientist and innovation leader whose career has spanned academia, startups, and independent non-profit research organizations. Her work focuses on the intersection of microbiology, fermented foods, and human health, with an emphasis on understanding how microbial communities function and contribute to health outcomes. First as a Bauer Fellow at Harvard University and later as Professor of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego, she has spent over 15 years pioneering the use of cheese and other fermented foods as model microbial ecosystems, advancing fundamental knowledge of microbial interactions. Her contributions have been recognized with honors including the Packard Fellowship, Pew Scholarship, and NIH Director’s New Innovator Award.
In addition to her research leadership, Dr. Dutton is a dedicated science communicator who speaks regularly to both scientific and public audiences about microbiology, food, and health work. Her research has also been featured in major media outlets, books, and documentary series. More recently, she has applied her scientific expertise within the broader innovation ecosystem, serving as a founding scientist at Arcadia Science and as a Resident at the Astera Institute, where she led efforts to generate open datasets on fermented foods and their impact on inflammation and human health. Through her work across discovery science, translation, and public engagement, Dr. Dutton is committed to building stronger connections between foundational research and meaningful societal impact.
